PipeliningAdvanced
1Question 1 of 1
javascriptWhat is Redis Pipelining and how does it dramatically improve throughput?
Explanation & Concept
Under regular client communication, Redis uses a synchronous request/response model: the client sends a command, pauses for network transit, and waits for the server response before sending the next command.
**Pipelining** allows the client to send dozens or hundreds of commands without waiting for intermediate responses. The server executes them in sequence and bundles all replies in a single network packet.
Code Example
javascript
// Benchmark: Sending 10,000 keys with Pipelining vs Sequentially
const pipeline = redis.pipeline();
for (let i = 0; i < 10000; i++) {
pipeline.set(`item:${i}`, `value_${i}`);
}
// All 10,000 commands sent in 1-2 TCP roundtrips!
const results = await pipeline.exec();
console.log("Successfully wrote 10k keys in a few milliseconds!");How It Works & Key Takeaways
Pipelining minimizes round-trip time (RTT). A operation that would take 10 seconds across 10,000 round-trips can complete in under 50 milliseconds using a pipeline.
